Fagradalsfjall volcano elopement in Iceland, Dennis + Kathrine
Eloping in Iceland: Dennis and Katherine's Fagradalsfjall Volcano Wedding.
It's not like every day you wake up and decide to get married at the volcano. Having your ceremony at Fagradalsfjall includes a lot of background work. Choosing the right route to hike (we hiked for almost 1 hour 30 minutes to get more private side of the volcano), searching how lot wind would get involved (a lot and oh by it was cold), and doing location scouting beforehand (since the hiking route can be quite difficult to hike). Also, this was the time when it wasn’t that sure would the volcano be active at all.
Planning an Elopement at Fagradalsfjall Volcano.
Fagradalsfjall is also the name of the area where the volcano had spread and was owned by a person. It’s been said that Reykjaness peninsula where Fagradalsfjall is located hasn’t had a volcanic eruption for 815 years until this one came on the 19th of March 2021.
For August 2021, it was much easier to plan a volcano elopement day in Iceland, since it was allowed to hike to the eruption site (this is not allowed in the year 2024).
When we planned this volcano elopement in Iceland happens, there were couple things we needed to pay attention to:
How fast would the regulations change if it wasn’t suddenly allowed to hike to the eruption site
Which hiking trail to choose based on everyone’s fitness level
What to pack and be prepared for in being in the wilderness
How strong the wind was going to be where would it blow the volcano’s pollution gas and would we be safe in the area due to this?
Dennis and Katherine's Unique Volcano Wedding.
It was still amazing to be part of this ceremony even though the volcano itself was a bit shy. We started the hike while stopping to catch our breath (the route we chose is really a big uphill) and to admire our surroundings. When we had reached up to the top, Dennis & Katherine helped each other to change into a wedding dress and suit. Also, who says you could only wear a white wedding dress on your elopement day? ;) Katherine looked absolutely gorgeous in her wedding dress matching the colours to the volcano-themed ceremony and with her hair of course!
After getting ready we took some portraits and were lucky to take pictures close to the magma. The wind was blowing away the gas from the volcano so it was safe for us to take pictures close to the magma rocks.
Sigurdur a.k.a. Iceland celebrant was to officiate the ceremony. The overlook of the volcano was just incredible. During the ceremony, the volcano kept itself not active but I can still say this was an incredible moment for the couple. A one to definitely remember! Since K& D got each other and were able to get officially married at the volcano.
Not a bad way at all to have your elopement in Iceland!
