Located on the Skógá River in the south of Iceland, the waterfall drops 60 meters (200 feet) and spans 25 meters (82 feet) in width. The sheer volume of water crashing down creates a mesmerizing curtain of mist, which often produces beautiful rainbows on sunny days. This natural phenomenon adds an extra touch of magic to any ceremony held here.
The area around Skogafoss is just as captivating. At the base of the waterfall, the land is flat, allowing visitors to walk right up to the cascade and feel the spray of water on their faces. For those who are more adventurous, a steep stairway leads to an observation platform above the waterfall, offering stunning panoramic views of the surrounding landscapes.

Benefits of having two elopement ceremonies.
How about having 2 elopement ceremonies on your day? This was something that I did with Emilia and Mickey.
Having two ceremonies allows you to choose different locations and settings that resonate with you and your partner. For example, you might have a quiet, private ceremony at a secluded beach or a hidden forest glade where you can exchange your vows in solitude. Later in the day, you can move to a more public and festive location, such as a picturesque waterfall or a scenic overlook, where you can celebrate with a small group of close friends and family.
Planning two ceremonies also gives you more flexibility in terms of timing. You can schedule the private ceremony during the early morning or late evening when the light is soft and the location is likely to be less crowded. Emilia and Mickey wanted to have a ceremony at one of the well-known waterfalls in Iceland: Skogafoss. Since it is super popular (and no wonder why) there is not really much privacy to have. This is why they also chose to have a ceremony at a more private waterfall to read out their vows.
A Private and Public Elopement Experience.
We arrived at Skogafoss already before around 8.30 am. and Skogafoss was offering its best in all its mighty power. But it took only 5 minutes after our arrival when the tourist busses surrounded us. We searched for a ceremony location close to Skogafoss itself and where the couple would still be quite dry. The power of Skogafoss is super powerful. It takes less than 5 minutes for me to get literally wet (even while having my waterproof coat with me) and have my makeup also well washed away. But the most important thing: the couple was dry.
After having their Viking-themed ceremony we headed to the more private waterfall where was just us. A private ceremony allows you to focus solely on each other without any distractions. This intimate setting provides a chance for you and your partner to connect deeply and share your personal vows in a meaningful way. The absence of an audience means you can be completely yourselves, expressing your emotions freely and authentically. This private moment becomes a cherished memory that is unique to just the two of you.
I love so much how Emilia and Mickey got to have waterfalls (which they love) on their day and to have their intimate ceremony just the way they wanted. There are many ways to have your ceremony in Iceland: from church weddings to getting married in nature, to having parts of a Viking ceremony in your ceremony and also a handfasting ceremony!
Emilia and Mickey were so relaxed, happy and laid-back people who were so happy about getting married to the person they loved the most in the world! After having their first ceremony at Skogafoss, the butterflies in their stomach had disappeared and they loved it so much on their second ceremony.
