Your Iceland elopement outfit: what to wear and pack.

It's time to tie the knot! You've decided to elope to Iceland, and you're ready to start planning your outfit. But what should you wear on a small island in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean? There are a few things you should keep in mind.

Since Iceland is an island with a distinctive geography, it has its own microclimate. The weather is unpredictable: it could be sunny and warm or dark and cold at any moment, so you want to be prepared for anything. You'll need a jacket that's warm enough to keep you cosy but light enough that you won't overheat if the sun comes out.

Here are a few tips for what to wear to your Iceland elopement:

1. Layers are key! Iceland's weather is unpredictable, especially when you're at the mercy of it out in the middle of nowhere. Be sure to bring good socks and boots (for hiking), but also remember that having a waterproof coat is also a must!

2. Pro tip: Embrace the dramatic landscape! A white and red dress looks excellent a black sand beach!

3. You also don't want to wear anything too restrictive. Your outfit needs to be able to move with you as you hike across mountains and traverse glaciers, so don't go for anything tight or constricting—you won't be comfortable, and it will make moving difficult.

4. Consider your footwear. Get waterproof shoes—if it rains, everything will get muddy, and if you're going to do any hiking or climbing, you'll need something sturdy that can handle rough terrain. During wintertime, it’s important your shoes aren’t slippery and to access some location you will need to attach crampons to your shoes.

5. If you're going to do your own makeup make sure your makeup is waterproof! There's a lot of precipitation and wind in Iceland, so you'll want to be able to stand up to that.

What not to wear to your elopement in Iceland:

Not worrying about what to wear will help you keep your stress levels to a minimum on your big day, so we put together a list of what NOT to wear at your Iceland elopement.

  • T-shirt

  • Sandals

  • Skinny jeans

  • Mini-skirt

  • High heels: Icelands ground is not made to high heels and there are many places where you could fall and have your ankles broken.

  • Shoes you can’t walk with long walks

  • Earrings: Do not bring big earrings. Very windy.

Wedding dresses that will look amazing in Iceland:

One of the biggest questions that a soon-to-be bride has is: what kind of a wedding dress should I have on my elopement day? It's one of the biggest decisions you will be having for your day.

I would still like to share with you some tips and tricks on choosing the right wedding dress and helping you find the one. Especially the tips I have found out work for the best while eloping in Iceland and these are real "aha" moments from other brides.

Finding your wedding dress in a store:

If you are going to a wedding dress store, it's good to let the store know where you will be eloping and what time of the year so you can see what kind of wedding dress material would keep you warm. Many of my brides have said that a good wedding seller can be recognized that they just have one look at you and can find you a dress that is your style and fits your body perfectly. What a superpower!

And did you know that you can take your wedding dress with you as hand luggage on an aeroplane? This is a good option to have the dress travel with you safely and not get lost.

Wedding dresses do make quite different shapes when moving around vs just standing still. It's important to check how well you can move in the dress. Try picking out the wedding dress and move around with it. Take more than a couple of steps. Have some twirl like you dancing around. Pick it up with one or two hands and run around. Is it possible to add warm layers underneath or on top?

Finding your wedding dress online:

For some brides walking into a bridal store and trying out wedding dresses is a dream come true. The selection of the wedding dresses are there in front of you and you have help from store helpers on finding the right dress that fits you perfectly. But this is not for everyone. Not everyone wants to try out tens of different wedding dresses and not all want to try wedding dresses in front of people. This is when shopping for your wedding dress online is the best option and also when you want to see what the world is offering for you.

Buying your wedding dress online doesn’t mean that you would be getting the cheapest option from China (oh the horror stories) but to see different options on what kind of wedding dresses has been made and to see what dress you can get with your budget.

Suit for your Iceland elopement.

Don't be afraid of showing colour: if you feel that black is not your option, then don't pick it. Just like brides are choosing their dress, it's important for you to feel comfortable in your suit, it sits well and the colour is the right one for you. Having a bit of colour in the suite always pops lovely in the landscape photos.

And if a suit or a tuxedo doesn't feel you, then ditch it. This is your day and you can wear whatever makes you feel good -ok maybe not just having sweatpants but you get the idea, haha! :D

If you’re hunting for elopement suits at a brick-and-mortar retailer, don’t hesitate to ask a salesperson for help with fitting. You don’t want anything to be too baggy or too tight. And even if the suit feels comfy, you’ll want to stretch, sit, and jog around in it to make sure it holds up. Remember, you’re gonna be hiking, dancing and jumping around like a crazy person.

If you're also going out to try different suits, a tailored suit for you can be the best. This is because it sits the best possible way for you and also they can make it out of fabric that serves best in Iceland's weather.
