How to pick your elopement location.

Embarking on an elopement adventure in Iceland is like stepping into a fairy tale where nature takes centre stage. Choosing the right location for your intimate celebration is not just about finding a picturesque spot; it's about weaving your unique love story into the fabric of Iceland's stunning landscapes. In this guide, we'll walk you through the essential elements of picking your elopement location in Iceland, all set to a straightforward tune that ensures your special day is as seamless as it is magical.

Personal Preferences and Priorities:

Your love story is unlike any other, and your elopement location should reflect that uniqueness. Consider your personal preferences and priorities as a couple. Do you dream of exchanging vows under the dancing Northern Lights or against the backdrop of a powerful waterfall? Understanding what resonates with you both sets the stage for a truly personalized and memorable experience.

Scenic Beauty:

Iceland is a treasure trove of natural wonders, each more awe-inspiring than the last. From the mystical allure of the Blue Lagoon to the rugged elegance of the Highlands, the scenic beauty is boundless. Choose a location that aligns with your vision and aesthetic preferences, whether it's the ethereal landscapes of Glacier Lagoons or the raw beauty of the canyons in Iceland.

Accessibility:

While Iceland's remote and untouched beauty is part of its allure, considering accessibility is key. Determine how easily you can reach your chosen location and whether it accommodates any special needs or preferences you may have. Some locations, like the iconic Seljalandsfoss waterfall, offer easy access, while others, such as the hidden gems in the Highlands, may require a bit more adventurous spirit.

Seasonal Considerations:

Iceland undergoes enchanting transformations throughout the year, each season offering a unique charm. Decide whether you envision a winter wonderland, a blossoming spring, a sun-kissed summer, or a golden-hued autumn ceremony. Each season brings its own magic, allowing you to tailor your elopement experience to the atmosphere you desire.

Weather Conditions:

Iceland's weather can be as dynamic as its landscapes, so understanding the weather conditions is crucial. Keep an eye on the forecast for your chosen date and location. Embrace the romantic mist of a waterfall in the drizzle or bask in the warm glow of the midnight sun during the summer. Preparing for the weather ensures you can fully immerse yourselves in the natural beauty around you.

Consideration of Logistical Aspects:

Planning an elopement involves more than just selecting a beautiful spot; it requires thoughtful consideration of logistical aspects to ensure a seamless experience.

A.) Permits and Regulations: Research any permits or regulations required for your chosen location. Some areas, like national parks and private properties, may have specific guidelines to follow. Obtain the necessary permissions well in advance to avoid any hiccups on your special day.

B.) Accommodations and Facilities: Consider the availability of accommodations and facilities near your chosen location. Whether you prefer a cosy cabin, a boutique hotel, or camping under the stars, ensuring suitable options are nearby adds to the convenience and comfort of your elopement experience.

C.) Transportation Options: Explore transportation options to and from your elopement location. Whether you opt for a classic Icelandic horse-drawn carriage, a private vehicle, or even a helicopter for a grand entrance, choosing the right mode of transportation adds an extra layer of romance and practicality to your day.

Picking your elopement location in Iceland is a harmonious blend of personal preferences, natural beauty, and logistical considerations. Let your love story unfold against the backdrop of Iceland's enchanting landscapes, and with the right considerations, your elopement will be a seamless and magical celebration of your unique journey together. So, set your hearts on an Icelandic adventure, and let the landscapes of this captivating country become the backdrop to your once-in-a-lifetime love story.

How to avoid tourist crowds in Iceland.

In the heart of Iceland's untamed beauty, eloping is not just a celebration of love but a dance with nature. Yet, to truly immerse yourselves in the magic of this land, avoiding the tourist crowds is key. Join us on a journey set to a straightforward tune, as we explore the art of eloping in Iceland with solitude as your witness.

Timing Your Elopement:

A.) Choosing the Right Season: Iceland's landscapes undergo a breathtaking transformation with each passing season. While summer brings the midnight sun and vibrant greenery, winter unveils a world adorned with snow and the dance of the Northern Lights. Choosing the right season is not only about weather preferences but also about aligning your vision with the unique beauty each season offers.

B.) Optimal Days and Times:Even within each season, some days and times are less frequented by tourists. Consider eloping on weekdays rather than weekends, and opt for early mornings or late afternoons. These quieter times allow you to bask in the serenity of your surroundings without the hustle and bustle of day-trippers.

Exploring Off-the-Beaten-Path Locations:

A.) Lesser-Known Gems: While iconic sites like the Golden Circle are undeniably stunning, exploring lesser-known gems unveils a quieter, more intimate side of Iceland. Venture off the beaten path to discover hidden waterfalls, secluded canyons, or untouched meadows. Websites like "I Heart Reykjavik" and local forums can be treasure troves of information on these hidden havens.

B.) Working with Local Guides: Local guides are your gateway to the secret corners of Iceland that often escape the tourist radar. They possess a wealth of knowledge about the land, its history, and the less-explored gems that await. Collaborating with a local guide not only enhances your elopement experience but also supports the local community. Their expertise ensures you navigate the terrain with ease, maximizing your time in secluded serenity.

Respectful Elopement Practices:

A.) Leave-No-Trace Principles: In the spirit of preserving Iceland's pristine landscapes, adhere to the Leave-No-Trace principles. Carry out everything you bring in, leave the environment as you found it, and minimize your impact on fragile ecosystems. This commitment to responsible elopement practices ensures that future generations can also revel in the unspoiled beauty of Iceland.

B.) Minimizing Impact on the Environment: Opt for eco-friendly choices throughout your elopement journey. Choose sustainable accommodations, practice responsible waste disposal, and consider carbon offsetting options for your travel. By minimizing your environmental impact, your elopement becomes a harmonious celebration with nature rather than a disruption.

Embracing Solitude in Your Iceland Elopement:

Eloping in Iceland is about more than just saying "I do"; it's a harmonious dance with the land. By strategically timing your elopement, exploring off-the-beaten-path locations, and adopting respectful practices, you can craft an experience that is both intimate and respectful of the stunning landscapes that host your celebration.

Picture exchanging vows with the roar of a lesser-known waterfall as your soundtrack, or feeling the soft whispers of the wind in a secluded meadow. Embrace the solitude that Iceland offers, allowing the landscapes to echo the authenticity of your love story. In this dance with nature, let the straightforward tune guide you towards a celebration that is uniquely yours, away from the tourist buzz and amidst the untouched beauty of this Nordic haven.

As you embark on this journey, may your elopement in Iceland be a testament to the love that knows no bounds and the respect that echoes through the ages. Solitude becomes your witness, and the landscapes become your eternal confidants in a celebration that transcends time.

Importance of following the “Leave no trace” ethic at your elopement location.

We need to protect Iceland’s lands.

Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics is a non-profit organization whose mission is to help educate others on how to protect the lands we all play anywhere in the world.

You might ask again why this has an effect on you getting married.

We need to protect the public lands. For example, Iceland’s tourism has grown like a rocket launch, that fast! This has brought many problems to the land: many tourists don’t respect nature and throw their garbage everywhere. Some places have been closed because tourists have been driving their cars over bird nests in the ground! Many lands have been broken and paths that once showed the safest ways to the location are now full of shortcuts that are not safe. Many park their cars off-road destroying the land. And also some tourists tend to defecate anywhere and everywhere. The worst ending would be that some more public land spots would get closed and you wouldn’t be able to have your ceremony or portraits taken there. In America, you need to apply to get a permit to photograph in national parks since they have had so many problems with people not following or not knowing what Leave No Trace is.

Leave No Trace Center has listed 7 principles:

  1. Plan ahead and prepare

  2. Travel and camp durable surfaces

  3. Dispose of waste probably

  4. Leave what you find

  5. Minimize campfire impacts

  6. Respect the wildlife

  7. Be considerate to other visitors

When we are spending the day outdoors, let’s do our part:

  • Make sure not to leave any waste or trash behind

  • Stay on the trail and be careful not to step on fragile vegetation.

  • Be mindful of others who are enjoying the space too: we might even run to other wedding couples and tourists. People are usually very considerate about sharing the space so everyone can get photos and have a good time. This is their experience too.

  • Leave what you find: flowers, rocks, etc.

  • If you are popping a bottle of bubbly to spray for a photo, let’s hold on to that cork and take it with us.

  • If you’re having your elopement with guests, leave no trace is extra important. The bigger the group is, there is much bigger the potential of leaving an impact on the land. Please make sure to tell your guests about Leave No Trace and the importance of staying on the trail.

  • Respect the wildlife.

  • Resist taking the shortcut. You can be making more damage to the land by trying to walk on shortcuts. Respect the marked trail and follow it.

  • If you bring something with you, take it with you when you leave -don’t leave anything behind!

Extra tip: keep your location a secret.

In the age of social media, many secret spots have turned into full of people and even damaged beyond repair! So what can we do? If you want to tag a location to your photos on social media, you can just tag the country you eloping. This way we can keep the land protected and you can even have the chance to visit it again!

We are never perfect and always learning how to protect our planet. Let’s keep it safe together.
