What to expect from getting married on a glacier and ice cave.
Glacier and ice cave elopements are only available during October-April. Safety is a crucial factor when it comes to visiting ice caves. During summertime, many ice caves melt and change shape, which might not be the safest time to visit the caves. The melting of ice caves makes them unstable and unpredictable, making them prone to collapse, and this can be hazardous for visitors. Therefore, the best time to visit ice caves is during winter or early spring when the temperature is low, and the ice caves are stable and safe to explore.
Private glacier and ice cave tours with Icelandic companies that prioritise safety.
Elopement day locations to choose from: Katla or Vatnajökull.
Pros and cons of eloping in the ice caves.
Pros of eloping in the ice caves and glaciers:
Unforgettable Scenery: Ice caves and glaciers provide breathtaking, once-in-a-lifetime backdrops that will make your elopement photos look absolutely magical. The shimmering blue ice and vast snowy landscapes are unparalleled.
Once-in-a-lifetime location: The glaciers and ice caves keep evolving all year round. Once you visit a glacier, it might not be the same a week or a month later from your day allowing you to have a truly unique location.
Privacy and intimacy: Depending on which area you choose to elope at, many glacier and ice cave locations are remote, meaning you’ll have a private, intimate ceremony far from crowds. It’s a deeply personal experience, just for you two (and a guide/photographer).
Cons of eloping in the ice caves and glaciers:
Unpredictable Weather: Icelandic weather is notoriously changeable, which can impact your elopement day. Sudden storms or dangerous conditions require last-minute adjustments or backup plans.
Limited Accessibility:
Not all guests (or couples) may be able to handle the physical demands of hiking or travelling to remote glaciers and ice caves. Some locations may require special vehicles or physical fitness.
Seasonal Availability: Ice caves and glaciers aren’t accessible year-round. Your elopement window may be limited to certain months, and you’ll need to plan carefully to ensure your chosen location is available.

Choosing the right attire is important for both comfort and style. Opt for a wedding dress and suit that aligns with the weather conditions – think about warmth without sacrificing elegance. Many couples choose elegant, long-sleeved dresses and weather-appropriate suits. Don't forget accessories like gloves and a cosy shawl to stay warm while complementing your overall look.
